FAQs

Got questions about HNA? You’re in the right place! This FAQ is here to give you quick answers about who we are, what we do, and how you can get involved.

Why should I become a member of HNA?

Because we’re stronger together! HNA is a movement by and for tenants, making sure our needs and voices are seen and heard. As a member, you help support the fight for fair and affordable housing in Amsterdam. Being a member means:

  • You get our newsletter and stay updated.

  • You’re welcome at all General Assemblies (ALVs) with voting rights.

  • You can get involved actively as a volunteer, in a working group, or through different actions.

How do I become a member of HNA?

It’s easy and online. Fill out the form, pay a minimum annual membership fee of €5, and you’re in. You’ll receive our newsletter and invitations to ALVs and activities. Become a Member

What is HNA not?

HNA is not a complaints desk. We don’t solve individual rental problems one-on-one. We focus on bigger, structural changes that benefit all tenants. We’re also not a bureaucratic institution, and we don’t compete with other initiatives. In fact, we love working with allies across the city to make our collective voice stronger.

Problems with your home or landlord?

For individual complaints, it’s best to contact organizations like !WOON or the Rental Committee (Huurcommissie). You can find them in our list of organizations. If you get stuck, or notice that your problem affects others too, do reach out to us. Together, we can look for collective solutions.

Can I visit HNA?

We don’t have a permanent location open to visitors yet, but we’re working toward regular consultation hours. As soon as there’s a place to come by, we’ll let you know!

Can I become a volunteer?

Absolutely! Become a member, explore our working groups, or email us at info[at]hna[dot]nl.

How did HNA start?

HNA began in 2019 as a foundation and became an union in 2024. Now, members have more influence: they can propose ideas and vote at the General Assembly and help build a strong tenants’ movement alongside the board and working groups.

What are membership fees and donations used for?

Every contribution goes into building the tenants’ movement: posters, online communication, actions, organizing, training, and supporting neighborhood and working groups.

How can I reach HNA?

The best way is to email us at: info[at]hna[dot]nl. We’ll get back to you as soon as we can!

What is an ALV?

A General Assembly (ALV) is where members come together to make important decisions and guide HNA’s direction. We meet at least twice a year, and every member has voting rights.

I don’t rent or live in Amsterdam. Can I become a member?

Yes, but only if you are actively looking for a rental home in Amsterdam.

My question isn’t answered, what now?

No problem! Just email us at info[at]hna[dot]nl. We’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
